A second schools art project for our current exhibition, Global Threads, is near completion. ‘Sewing Schools Together’, a project name courtesy of a year 5 pupil from Medlock Primary, has been a four week adventure in which the participating schools (Crab Lane, Birchfields, Heald Place and Medlock Primary) have circulated sewed on textile designs, all with their particular palette of colours, that are linked to their teachers current subjects, topics and themes that were being delivered to their classes during that time. During the project, we asked each of the pupils (who had completed one quarter of pre-cut organically sourced cotton cloth – calico) to write a little letter and message to the next receiving school and child to share their experiences and to describe their sewn work and how it related to what they were being taught. Working alongside Andrea Lord (Manchester Arts and Craft Centre), we will be collating all of these fabulously bright, vibrant and detailed sewing outcomes and will look to have these stitched together and put on display outside our Cafe walls. Watch this space!
