The Art Bus is used for community outreach sessions and workshops linking to the vast music and art programmes developed by teams from Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery, Platt Hall – Gallery of Costume and the Manchester Museum. The Art Bus began it’s journey with us as a free drop in workshop that invited families to design and make stencils to be applied on the Bus itself. Tapping into African symbolism and motifs and taking inspiration from African mass transit buses, we asked participants to come up with symbols and logos that could go onto the stencil template. This activity had people reflecting about local history and design movements that could be represented on the Art Bus. Some people in Africa decorate buses with slogans and the transport plays an integral part for the community moving people from one end of the city to the other. These workshops, facilitated by Whitworth Learning team was delivered by Creative Hands, Trinity House, Rusholme.
