Archaeology Dig and excavation – Whitworth Park.

In the Park during half term last week, Whitworth played host to an archaeology team excavating the land just behind the Gallery. The objective was to explore the remains of garden features, and specifically the glasshouses and associated buildings that are shown to the rear of what was Grove House in late nineteenth – and early twentieth century maps of the area. Some of the original buildings are just beneath the current ground surface where little trenches were made from an earlier excavation last year. The team on site, David, Graham and Ian, all made our visitors and groups feel very welcome with their enthusiasm and passion as they began their dig to unearth some local history. A home education session that went down for an hour came back with shillings, victorian pottery and much more. Be sure to re-visit the blog to see a report on all the findings soon!
